Cristiano Ronaldo captures 3rd Ballon d’Or
Congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo who won his third FIFA Ballon d’Or and second in a row. He received 37.66% of all votes ahead of Lionel Messi on 15.76% & Manuel Neuer on 15.72%.
Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo retained his best player in the world title after a season that can only be described as his best ever. He has arguably reached the heights perhaps even surpassed what Messi achieved back in 2011. Ronaldo’s achievements for Madrid included the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. He had a disappointing World Cup campaign however, that saw Portugal exit at the group stage.
Ronaldo became the first player for his country Portugal to achieve the years biggest award 3 times in a career. He beat out four times Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and Germany’s Manuel Neuer to the 2014 best player award. He is now in a small elite club of players to be crowned best player three times which includes Zinedine Zidane and Brazil’s Ronaldo.
Cristiano scored 31 goals in 30 matches in the Spanish league making him the top scorer as well as a record 17 goals in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.
Lionel Messi also had a great year but he was hampered at the beginning of the season with injury issues. Despite that, he still managed to end the season as the second-highest scorer in La Liga 2014 with 28 goals which was not far behind Ronaldo. However, his club team was not able to secure the title and they exited the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals. He did get his country Argentina, to the Final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup where his team lost in extra time. He collected the adidas Golden Ball for his effort.
Manuel Neuer the other contender may have won this award in any other time in history, but was always going to be tough for him to win against Ronaldo and Messi. He was the no1 goalkeeper for both world champions Germany and German titleholders Bayern Munich. He made a number of incredible saves at the 2014 FIFA World Cup which gave him the the adidas Golden Glove and secured his country’s team as the winners of the tournament. He also won the league and DFB Cup double with Bayern.
