On this day Pele scored his 1000th goal
Forty five years ago today, Pele scored his 1000th professional goal in his football career. The goal came on November 19, 1969 during a penalty kick against Vasco da Gama at the Maracana stadium. 80,000 fans applauded even though Santos was the opposing team. Pele scored a total of 1,282 goals in 1,363 games in his professional career. In 1993 he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Most top footballer lists put Pele as the greatest player in football history. However, current players such as Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo could surpass Pele’s achievements. However, according to many famous Brazillian footballers including Pele himself, it will be Neymar who will come closest or surpass Pele’s footballing achievements.
