Lionel Messi tries everything in Argentina draw
While Lionel Messi has won just about every trophy and accolade possible, he is yet to win anything major for his country. The Barcelona superstar tried everything on Thursday to give Argentina a win against Peru, but his teammates missed some incredible chances once again. Now Argentina and the best player on the planet are in serious danger of missing out on the 2018 World Cup.
Argentina are in a very awkward position. To qualify for the World Cup, they now need to win their next match on the 10th of October against Ecuador and also count on other results going their way. So there is a real chance that one of the most successful national teams in the world will not be in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Argentina have won two World Cups in their amazing history, once in 1978 and again in 1986. They have been present in all World Cup competitions except four. In the 2012 World Cup, Messi took Argentina all the way to the finals and lost out to Germany in extra time. He was however voted the best player. He also took Argentina to the finals of the last two Copa Americas. In the last Copa, he was so upset that he retired from international duty. He rejoined the national team some months later to help Argentina in the qualifiers, but it seems that no matter how good he plays, his team wastes the chances he gives them.
In the first half of the match against Peru, Messi received little help from Ángel Di María and Gómez, so created chances for himself. Twice he nearly put Argentina ahead. His first chance saw him hit wide after a great shot, then sent in a scintillating cross to teammate Benedetto who headed over the crossbar.
After the break, Messi hit the post and Lucas Biglia produced a spectacular save from a Pedro Gallese long shot. Argentina then continued to miss great chances that Messi continued to provide. You have to feel sorry for Messi, he cannot do this on his own, and his national team not only let him down on Thursday, but have been letting him down for years.
We can only hope that Messi gets the chance to win a World Cup or Copa at some stage in his career. If not, it seems that Maradona will always hold the bragging rights when it comes to Argentina.
