Messi wins 2017 Golden Shoe award
Lionel Messi wins 4th Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer after netting 37 times in La Liga.
Messi first won the award back in the 2012-13 season with 46 league goals. He then won it in the 2011-12 season with 50 goals and the 2009-10 season with 34 goals. In the 2016-17 season he scored 37 in the Spanish league to earn him his latest Golden Shoe. Messi is now tied with Cristiano Ronaldo on four Golden Shoes. Luis Suarez presented the award as he won the award the previous season (2015-16) with 40 goals.
Upon receiving the award, Messi said:
“I have never considered myself a forward. I have been lucky enough to score goals,” Messi said. “I have grown both on and off the pitch. I keep improving and adding things to my game, and I enjoy playing more and more.”
For the last nine years the award has gone to Messi, Ronaldo, or Suarez.
Messi earned the top scorer award despite playing more like a midfielder. The following graphic shows his heatmap throughout his La Liga season and you would expect the top scorer to spend most of his time near the goal. But we are talking about Messi here, who is arguably the best player of all time.
