No Messi no problem as Barcelona win EL Clasico
In Sunday’s EL Clasico, Barcelona embarrassed Real with four goals in front of the Madrid crowd. To add insult to injury, they achieved this result without play-maker Lionel Messi and rival Cristiano Ronaldo only had one shot on target. The final score 4-0 to Barca.
“Men against boys,” was how Chris Waddle from BBC Radio 5 live described the performance. Barcelona stamped their dominance in this game leaving Real Madrid to ask some serious questions.
Make no mistake about today’s game, it was a historical win. They had previously won 4-0 in Real’s home ground in a 1986 Copa del Rey match and recorded a 5-0 win back in 1974 in a league away game. The result of today’s fine performance sees Barcelona rise six points clear at the top of the table. While Real Madrid are second, they will need a miracle to rise above Barcelona.
Man of the match went to Andres Iniesta who scored and assisted for the first time in his professional career. Luis Suarez scored twice, with Neymar scoring as well.
Suarez opened the scoring when he slotted home a 16 yard shot from a through ball by Sergi Roberto. Neymar scored next with a left footed shot from a difficult angle when Andrés Iniesta assisted with a through ball. After the break, Neymar assisted Andrés Iniesta who shot to the top right corner from the centre of the box. In the 73rd minute, Suarez shot to the bottom left corner with an assist from Jordi Alba. While Messi was substituted in the 56th minute when he replaced Ivan Rakitic, he didn’t score as his two attempts at goal were blocked.
So where to from here for Real Madrid. Our guess is they need to buy some new high-caliber scorers. While they have Ronaldo, Barcelona have Messi, Suarez, and Neymar. Players that Real Madrid could look to buy are those in the current Ballon d’Or list. Our pick is Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich who is currently one of the most prolific goal scorers on the planet. Or perhaps Sergio Aguero if that were possible.
