Paris St-Germain crowned French champions
Paris St-Germain beat Montpellier 2-1 in the Ligue 1 final to become French champions for the third consecutive season. It was a hard fought game especially with the absence of their attacking forward, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. PSG are now on track to be the first French team to secure the domestic treble.
PSG already exited the Champions League nearly one month ago thanks to Barcelona, leaving the Parisians with domestic titles to win. They already won the League Cup last month against Bastia, as well as the Ligue 1 title on Saturday at La Mosson. This leaves them with an easy match against second division AJ Auxerre for the French Cup on May 30 to secure the domestic treble. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for PSG who played much of the season without Ibrahimovic due to injury and match suspensions. But team mate Edinson Cavani stood up to become the standout player toward the end of the season.
In the Ligue 1 final, Matuidi was the first to strike when he breached Montpellier’s defence. Then Lavezzi added PSG’s second with a low cross that went pass the keeper. Mounier struck just before the break when he placed the ball over the head of PSG’s keeper Salvatore Sirigu leaving the game at 2-1.
