Paulinho proves his worth for Barcelona
Barcelona’s controversial signing of Brazilian international Paulinho, proved the difference in their win over newly promoted Getafe.
It is fair to say that Barcelona had a tough transfer window. While they did sign Ousmane Dembele to replace Neymar, but they failed to secure Liverpool midfielder, Philippe Coutinho and PSG midfielder Marco Verratti. Barcelona did sign another player though, a failed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder by the name of Paulinho. Signing the 29 year old left many fans and critics scratching their heads. The Brazilian was signed while playing in the Chinese Super League, but was a regular for his national team Brazil and scored a ton of goals too. Barca took a chance for sure and in today’s match at least, the gamble paid off big time. His late goal gave the Catalans three points for the win, to temporarily go seven points clear of rivals Real Madrid in the table.
Jose Paulo Bezerra Maciel Junior is not your typical Barcelona midfield player though. He is not fast, but he is very strong and solid. Perhaps this is what Barcelona really need, a non-typical midfield player who can give Barcelona a different approach when he comes on.
Before Paulinho struck the winner, Getafe’s Gaku Shibasaki scored a masterclass goal with a stunning volley in the first half and Denis Suarez levelled with a goal after the break. Dembele was also replaced in the 29th minute for Gerard Deulofeu due after he sustained a hamstring injury.
