Ronaldo brace helps Real Madrid to Champions League title
Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid side beat Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff on Saturday. His goals also sees him surpass Messi as the competition’s top scorer.
A goal in each half from Ronaldo, a goal from Casemiro, and a last minute goal from Asensio saw Real Madrid become the first side since AC Milan in 1990 to win back-to-back cups. Unlike last Real Madrid’s victory last season, they had a convincing win even if the first half was more or less even. Juventus only goal was a sensational overhead bicycle kick from Mandzukic, a certain contender for a Puskas Award. But the goal was no conciliation for Juve who have now lost five Champions League finals since they last lifted the trophy back in 1996. They were also unlucky as two of Real’s goals were deflections which are often difficult to save.
Real Madrid’s victory was all the sweeter for Ronaldo who was named man of the match and leveled with top scorer Lionel Messi. He surpassed Messi’s record in the second half by one goal. The perfect end of the season for the Portuguese whose season could see him earn him another Ballon d’or.
