Suarez, Messi, Neymar on target in 5-0 rout
Barcelona are only one win away from retaining the La Liga title after Sunday’s 5-0 rout against Espanyol at Camp Nou. Suarez led on goals with two, while Messi, Rafinha, then Neymar got one apiece.
Barcelona will lift the title for the sixth time in eight seasons if they win their next match against lowly placed Granada or equal Real Madrid’s result when they take on another low placed team, Deportivo La Coruna. Atletico Madrid can no longer win the La Liga title following their shock 2-1 defeat to relegated Levante. Currently, Barcelona are one point clear of second placed Real Madrid and three ahead of Atletico.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring against Espanyol with a spectacular free kick that went over the wall and into the top right corner. After the break, Suarez scored when assisted by Messi. The Uruguayan scored again when he headed in after being assisted by Neymar. Rafinha got on the scoreboard next when the Espanyol keeper couldn’t hold the ball after a shot at goal. Neymar tapped one in near the end of the match after a few short passes found their way to him at the left side of the goal.
Luis Suarez preserves his hold on the Pichichi Trophy and European Golden Shoe with a tally of 37 goals so far in La Liga. He is three ahead of second placed Cristiano Ronaldo who sits on 33 goals. This could be the Uruguayan’s year as his sensational form this season is likely to earn him a Ballon d’Or nomination later in the year.
